Quick Tip: Interpreting the 7 of Disks

by Douglas Gibb on September 21, 2010

I was speaking to a friend of mine last night and he pointed out something unique to the 7 of Disks.

Next time you see the 7 of Disks in a Tarot reading, try using this interpretation: “this is about someone at work you find attractive”.

I know, weird interpretation right? I thought so too, until I reflected on it.

Bottom line, if I’d known about it from the start, I would have saved myself on having to use complicated techniques to figure out what was going on.

So, why does the 7 of Disks indicate someone at work the client finds attractive?

No idea! I suspect it has something to do with disks being the most material expression of the number 7 (Saturn — impractical dreaming?). It’s almost like it’s saying, “this is the most visually attractive, yet crude and unrealistic expression, of beauty.”

There is also the most obvious association of Disks with the work place — providing us Tarot readers with the location and setting for this physical attraction to take place.

Have you ever noticed this before? Take a moment to think back through all the readings you’ve ever done with the 7 of Disks and see if it fits.

According to BotA and Crowley, the card is Saturn in Taurus. Given Taurus is ruled by Venus, you could say that Saturn is affecting a venusian energy here – which could very much be ‘illicit’ attraction ;)

I enjoy the suggestion; Saturn will throw difficult or impossible desires at us and challenge us with a framework which makes that desire feel impossible. Saturn challenges us to realize either our freedom in the world (Disrupt the structure, might lose you) or our freedom of the mind (Transmute the attraction into something else, like friendship), can the tension be released.

If freedom isn’t exercised here, there is a circumstantial enslavement, which might even lead to a need for a bigger change (new job, begin dating, something.)

Thanks Doug, I won’t dip into the other symbols at the moment, but its really fun to think about – fun article!

I wonder if he meant that in the RWS symbolism, the man in leaning on his hoe in a rather dreamy state…much like a person who should be working but instead is daydreaming about that first date they had Friday night, gazing off into nowhere in his romantic dreams.

I’d never thought of the card in quite that way before, but now it will be difficult for me *not* to see that. lol

I also never thought of the card with this meaning but I do like it as a possible interpretation. In this scenario, an attraction to someone at work could be a sign of the client’s need to move forward in some other area of his life.

In the RWS image of the card, the idea of pentacles being the object of the client’s gaze is quite interesting. Maybe there is even projection by the client on to the attractive person at work stemming from what he needs to cultivate within himself. I like the idea of seeing pentacles as an object of beauty and related to projection in that particular RWS image.

I’ll see how this interpretation could work in my future readings. Thanks, as always, Doug!

If you add in the Qabalah to the mix, Sevens relate to Netzach which is the sphere of the emotions and is ruled by Venus. Rules everything to do with beauty, attraction etc. Putting the disks here adds in the work element.

This has really made me think and as the others have said it does make sense. I will use this thought in future readings and see where it leads.

Thank you for the insight.

Unfortunately I always, without fricking fail, get this card to indicate the Crowley interpretation: failure.

I have seen it! It didn’t really seem to fit in a reading I was doing for a friend (so I confess I kind of ignored it). I’d already read but forgotten this tip, but looking back at her reading again WOW, and yes it does fit with the rest of her reading… which has turned out to all be about a guy at her work – hmm, she was clearly a bit preoccupied ;) – even though she had asked about something else entirely!

I really like Donnaleigh’s comment, I guess that we’re talking business and material concerns with the pentacles, and yet the number 7 has a rather unfocused and organic energy (being associated with venus and nature) which could easily relate to someone being distracted by something “off topic” in the world of work… The argument then, I guess is that nature is full of organization, but since this is 7 and not the 6 (leaning heavily on cabalistic numerology here) I suspect that the 7’s are more indicative of wild, unstructured nature and natural forces. It’s always been my conception that the 7’s are wild nature, 8’s industry, organization, culture and technology and the 6’s an idealistic synchrony of the two.

Hey Chris,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this one (I think the guy that came up with that interpretation might be something of an innovator :D ).

7’s indicate what in the present is being done for the future. The element describes the nature of it. For instance 7 of cups- daydreaming about the future. Swords- research, scheming, over analyzing. Wands- courage, standing up for beliefs, decisiveness. Pentacles- taking stock, storing away, frugality. It’s a time of harvest, finding out whether or not all those seeds you planted in the past come to fruition. Saturn is about past responsibility and it’s impact now (why Saturn returns can be unpleasant b/c they are “course correction” or times of increased responsibility for people who are “on track”). So with 7 of pentacles, now is the time to see whether you have enough food for “the winter” or screwed. You can’t really plant anymore seeds now. It’s a time of waiting.

Hi, did a 2card reading for a client yesterday about “love” and the 7 of pentacles came out. It was spot on- falling in love for someone at work-and guess what- turned out she’s also a taurus. Amazing tarot.:-) glad that i’ve read about this article you posted and today I see the interpretation fits perfectly. Thank you,and thank you all of you for sharing :-) x

Hi Christine,

Thank you for sharing your experience. I’m glad it was useful for you :)

Well when you find someone at work fanciable it can take a glacial age for anything to happen. Unless you have a stationery cupboard that locks from the inside.
